Choosing an International Financial Adviser

expat remote financial advice

At GWM we understand that as an international worker you may find yourself in the more remote parts of the world, without regular access to either your investments or your Adviser.

That’s why we’ve been consistently investing in online technology to enhance our proposition since way before the Coronavirus reared its ugly head!

Interactive web meetings, online conferencing and the GWM investor portal places your Financial Adviser, and access to your investment portfolio, literally in the palm of your hands regardless of your recent postings.

During these unprecedented times, GWM’s team of experienced Advisers are on hand to guide international workers through the uncertainty.

If you have any questions regarding your savings, pensions or repatriation, even if you are not a GWM client, you can request a call back or send us a question through the form on this page and experts who will get back to you as a quickly as possible.

Even in times like this, being able to provide advice via video call should never be the main driver in requesting financial advice.

To make the process smoother,  we have compiled a checklist of what else you should be looking for should you need to enlist the help of a professional.

Is your financial planner qualified and licensed in line with established jurisdictions?

Often the jurisdictions expatriates find themselves in have lower regulatory requirements than established financial markets such as the UK and USA. As a result, many advisers operate with basic qualifications, or even none at all!

All GWM entities are regulated in the jurisdiction where they are established and, in keeping with our UK roots, work to the spirit of UK regulation.  Additionally, all senior GWM Financial Planners are at least CISI level 4 qualified, and key members of our team hold Chartered status in their relevant disciplines.

It's vital that you carry out your own due diligence.  Simple checks may save you from dealing with an unscrupulous financial professional or disreputable firm.

Do they have a clear and transparent investment strategy?

To provide the best financial planning advice it is vital that your adviser remains independent and operates purely in the best interests of their clients.

Our in-house Investment Committee comprises of representatives from various departments of the business with a primary function of providing governance and oversight to the investment proposition of the business.  Our industry-leading investment proposition is based on protecting existing wealth and building steady and consistent returns.

Do they provide a full 360 service?

Planning for the future involves more than setting up a 25 year savings plan.  Most international workers will return home at some point in the future. Yet over 97% of international planning firms don’t possess the ability to offer regulated repatriation advice or service to British expats when they choose to return home.

GWM’s Repatriation team exist to do just that. Working alongside you to ensure you aren’t faced with any unexpected tax issues upon your return.

Do they provide pension advice in-house?

Pensions come in many different forms, carrying different benefits and structures. Contracts can be many years old, with hefty charges and old-style investments or very valuable with no reason for change.  Understanding your international pension benefits can be difficult and, with ever changing legislation, regular reviews and management of your fund with qualified specialists are critical to delivering enhanced pension performance.

GWM's specialist International Pensions Division is always on hand to support both you, and your Adviser to help sort your QROPS' from your SIPP's; so all you have to do is dream of retirement, safe in the knowledge that your money has been working as hard for you, as you did to earn it.
