It's decision time

Without getting too technical, interest rates have a massive effect on how scheme administrators must calculate member transfer values. The lower the interest rate, the higher the transfer value offered.

Brexit has resulted in a massive opportunity for those with UK defined benefit pensions. The drop in interest rates to an all-time low of 0.25% can’t last long, but while it’s here we need to take advantage of it. If you have a defined benefit (“final salary” or “career average”) pension plan, NOW is the time to review your options.

In the last few months we have seen pension calculations increase up to 20% from their value at the beginning of the year. If you have a frozen plan you should now assess your options, knowing that the value you are offered today will potentially be the best offer you will ever get.

So, if you have a frozen pension in the UK, it’s decision time. We know it’s something you’ll have put off for years, but if you engage with your retirement plans, and ensure you fully understand what you have in place and the alternatives available; if you engage with your financial future, you will be able to make an educated decision over your final salary plan and, going forward, be safe in the knowledge that it’s done; you’ve made your mind up and you’ve got the plan you’re comfortable with to take you to and through retirement.
